PHP2Shell: Is Your Website Safe? What to Do Now

Published and fact-checked: October 23, 2026. We will update this page as hosting companies and security teams share more.
Quick answer: is my website at risk from PHP2Shell?
PHP2Shell is the nickname for two critical security flaws in PHP itself (CVE-2026-109618 and CVE-2026-109619). PHP is the programming language behind WordPress, Joomla, Drupal and a huge number of business websites. The PHP team released fixes on October 21, 2026.
What to do: ask your hosting company to move your site to PHP 8.5.12, 8.4.27, 8.3.36 or 8.2.35 (or newer). Updating WordPress, your theme or your plugins is still a good idea, but it does not fix this problem on its own, because the weakness sits underneath your website.
What is PHP2Shell?
PHP2Shell covers two memory-safety bugs in the core of PHP. Both are rated critical (CVSS 9.2). Researchers from Wiz, OpenAI and Calif showed that, on affected servers, an attacker could run commands or read data from server memory without logging in. That memory can hold sensitive items such as passwords, session tokens and API keys.
The key point for business owners: the flaws are in PHP, not in WordPress or any one plugin. Wiz demonstrated attacks against WordPress, Drupal and Joomla, and security researchers note that a fully updated WordPress site can still be exposed if the PHP version underneath it is not patched.
Who is affected?
Any website that runs on PHP and has not applied the October 21 fixes. According to the PHP security team, this includes PHP-FPM, Apache with mod_php, php-cgi, FrankenPHP and LiteSpeed setups. The bugs go back to PHP 5.4, so almost every PHP version from the last decade is involved. PHP says the risk is highest on servers that use mod_php.
If your website is built with WordPress, an online shop, a booking system or a custom PHP application, this applies to you. Sites built only with static HTML, or on platforms that do not use PHP, are not affected by this particular issue.
Why is this story bigger than one bug?
Wiz reports that it used frontier AI models to find and chain together flaws that had been hiding in PHP for about ten years. It found the first issue in August and reported it to the PHP team on August 24, 2026. The fixes were released only after the PHP project and several security teams coordinated the disclosure.
The lesson is simple: AI is making it faster to find weaknesses in old software. That is good news when researchers find the bugs first, and it is a reason for every business to patch quickly, keep its website software current and avoid unsupported PHP versions.
Is PHP2Shell being exploited right now?
Several security companies reported seeing exploitation attempts around the time of release, so this is not only theoretical. At the same time, one security firm (Sansec) noted on October 22 that mass exploitation looked less likely than first feared, because the public exploit code did not work against a default PHP installation. Their advice was still the same: update PHP anyway. The situation may change, so treat patching as urgent but do not panic.
What should you do today?
- Check your PHP version. In WordPress, go to Tools, then Site Health, then the Info tab, then Server. You will see your PHP version there. You can also find it in your hosting control panel (for example cPanel’s PHP version tool) or ask your host.
- Ask your host to apply the fix. Most good hosts update PHP for you or give you a one-click switch. Ask them directly: “Has my server been patched for CVE-2026-109618 and CVE-2026-109619?”
- Move off old PHP versions. PHP 8.1 and older no longer receive official support, so there is no official fix for them. Plan an upgrade to a supported version and test your site first.
- Back up your site before and after the change, then keep WordPress core, themes and plugins up to date as usual.
- Do not rely on partial fixes. Firewall rules and PHP configuration changes can reduce risk but, according to researchers, give only partial protection. The real fix is the updated PHP version.
- Watch for warning signs. Unknown admin users, unfamiliar files, unexpected redirects, sudden traffic spikes or a warning from your host or Google are all reasons to run a security scan and ask for help.
Fixed PHP versions at a glance
| Your PHP branch | Version with the fix |

| PHP 8.5 | 8.5.12 or newer |
| PHP 8.4 | 8.4.27 or newer |
| PHP 8.3 | 8.3.36 or newer |
| PHP 8.2 | 8.2.35 or newer |
| PHP 8.1 or older | No official fix. Upgrade to a supported branch. |
What does this mean for businesses in the USA, UK, Australia and the Gulf?
The risk is the same wherever your customers are: a hacked website can leak customer data, send spam or show scam pages under your brand. Depending on your country and industry, a data breach can also create legal duties to notify customers or regulators. If you handle personal data from customers in the USA, UK, Australia, the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Qatar or Kuwait, speak to a qualified legal or compliance adviser about your obligations. This article is general information, not legal advice.

Frequently asked questions about PHP2Shell
What is PHP2Shell?
PHP2Shell is the name used for two critical vulnerabilities in the PHP programming language, tracked as CVE-2026-109618 and CVE-2026-109619. They can let an attacker run code on a server or read data from its memory without logging in. Fixes were released on October 21, 2026.
Is WordPress itself vulnerable to PHP2Shell?
The flaws are in PHP, not in WordPress. However, because WordPress runs on PHP, a WordPress site on an unpatched PHP version can be exposed even if WordPress and all plugins are fully updated.
Which PHP version fixes PHP2Shell?
The fixed versions are PHP 8.5.12, 8.4.27, 8.3.36 and 8.2.35, or any newer release. PHP 8.1 and older are no longer officially supported.
How do I check my PHP version in WordPress?
Log in to your WordPress dashboard, open Tools, then Site Health, then the Info tab and expand the Server section. Your PHP version is listed there. Your hosting control panel or hosting provider can also tell you.
Can a plugin or firewall protect my site from PHP2Shell?
A firewall or security plugin can reduce some risk, but researchers say these measures give only partial protection. Updating PHP to a fixed version is the proper solution.
Do I need to panic?
No, but you should act this week. Check your PHP version, ask your host to patch, and keep backups. Early reports say public exploits did not work against a default PHP setup, but you should not count on that.
